Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has stirred speculation within Republican circles by suggesting a potential vice-presidential candidate for former President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign: Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin (R).

McCarthy’s suggestion, highlighted during a panel interview on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” comes as Trump narrows down his choices. Among the frontrunners are GOP Senators J.D. Vance (Ohio), Marco Rubio (Fla.), and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum (R). Trump has also floated Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) as a contender.

The looming Republican National Convention is expected to be the stage for Trump’s official announcement of his running mate.

During the interview, McCarthy emphasized Youngkin’s electoral appeal, particularly in swing states crucial for securing victory. “If you really want to play the game, I want to win the election, pick Youngkin in Virginia. Put Youngkin in play and the race is over,” McCarthy asserted.

McCarthy pointed to current polling that favors Trump in key states like Arizona, Nevada, and Georgia, tallying up to 267 electoral votes. To secure a win, Trump would need to clinch one of the pivotal states: Michigan, Wisconsin, or Pennsylvania.

Youngkin’s popularity in Virginia, a state with 13 electoral votes that hasn’t voted Republican since 2004, underscores McCarthy’s strategic thinking. Trump endorsed Youngkin, who triumphed in Virginia’s gubernatorial election in 2021, marking a significant Republican victory after years of Democratic leadership.

Recent joint appearances by Youngkin and Trump at public events have fueled speculation about his potential candidacy. However, within the GOP, opinions vary—Donald Trump Jr. favors Vance, while others advocate for Rubio or Burgum. Trump himself has remained coy about his decision, sometimes hinting at a preference and other times indicating ongoing consideration.

Reflecting on the selection process, McCarthy likened it to “The Apprentice,” referencing Trump’s reality TV show. Despite the speculation, McCarthy emphasized that Trump’s decision-making process will keep everyone guessing until the final announcement.
