Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy has urged former President Donald Trump to shift his focus away from Vice President Kamala Harris’s rally crowd sizes and instead scrutinize her political record.
McCarthy, who served California’s 20th congressional district from 2007 until his resignation in 2023, made these remarks in response to Trump’s recent criticisms of Harris. Appearing on Fox News on August 12, McCarthy advised Trump to concentrate on Harris’s policy positions and actions rather than trivial matters.
“You’ve got to make this race not on personalities,” McCarthy asserted during the interview. He emphasized that Trump should “stop questioning the size of her crowd and start questioning her position” on significant issues affecting Americans.

McCarthy highlighted several areas where Harris’s record could be subjected to greater scrutiny. He pointed to Harris’s tenure as California’s Attorney General, a period often criticized for inadequate responses to systemic issues within the state’s legal system. As Vice President, Harris’s management of the U.S.-Mexico border and her role in casting tie-breaking votes in the Senate, particularly regarding inflation and the expansion of IRS agents, were also brought up by McCarthy as crucial points for political debate.
The former Speaker’s comments follow Trump’s recent allegations on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he accused Harris of using AI-generated images to exaggerate her rally’s crowd size. Trump claimed that Harris had manipulated images to show a massive crowd at an event at Detroit Metro Airport, despite the apparent lack of attendees.
“Has anyone noticed that Kamala CHEATED at the airport? There was nobody at the plane, and she ‘A.I.’d’ it, and showed a massive ‘crowd’ of so-called followers, BUT THEY DIDN’T EXIST!” Trump wrote, alleging that a maintenance worker had exposed the supposed deception.
McCarthy’s intervention highlights an ongoing debate within the Republican Party about the most effective strategies to challenge the Democratic nominee. Whether Trump’s focus will shift from crowd sizes to policy critiques remains uncertain, but McCarthy’s comments underscore the importance of addressing substantive issues as the election approaches.
