Milan, Italy – On Lake Maggiore in the Lombardy area of Italy, a sudden and severe storm caused havoc and tragically caused a tourist boat to capsize. Three bodies have been found, according to Italian firefighters, while one person is still missing. Divers working with a helicopter to examine the lake’s waters are part of the ongoing search for the missing person.
A whirlwind slammed the boat carrying more than 20 visitors and the crew late on Sunday, causing the disaster. Near Lisanza, at the southern end of Lake Maggiore, firefighters reported that 19 people were successfully saved, either by swimming to shore or by being picked up by other boats that came to their assistance.
Lombardy region president Attilio Fontana called the situation “very serious” and blamed it on the sudden windstorm. The 16-meter (52-foot) boat that was involved in the catastrophe was a tourist-rented watercraft.
According to Italy’s Varese News, there were 25 individuals overall aboard the boat, including 23 vacationers and 2 crew members. Firefighters’ distressing video, released by Corriere della Sera, shows a search helicopter traveling over choppy waters with floating debris like chairs adding to the difficult circumstances.
The whirlwind was a component of a larger storm system that affected Lombardy on Sunday night, disrupting travel at Malpensa Airport and underscoring the intensity of the weather.
The second-largest lake in Italy and a well-known tourist destination, Lake Maggiore is found on the southern slope of the Alps and is admired for its natural beauty.
