Routine traffic stop spiraled into a deadly confrontation Tuesday afternoon, leaving a 41-year-old Troy man dead following an officer-involved shooting in Shelby Township, Michigan.
The incident began around 3:17 p.m. near the busy intersection of Van Dyke Avenue and 22 Mile Road. According to Shelby Township Police, an officer had pulled over a white Dodge Caravan when things suddenly took a dramatic turn. The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, got out and took off on foot, prompting a chase behind a nearby strip of businesses.
Police say the officer repeatedly shouted for the man to stop. At one point during the pursuit, the officer used a TASER, but the suspect kept running. Moments later, he allegedly pulled out a firearm. Despite multiple commands to drop the weapon, police say the man did not comply—leading the officer to open fire.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and rushed the suspect to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities have confirmed his identity but are holding off on releasing his name until his family has been notified.
As per department policy, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave while the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office takes over the investigation.
Shelby Township Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward as they continue to piece together what led to the deadly encounter.
