Manchester United’s Europa League campaign continues to falter as they secured another frustrating 1-1 draw, this time against Fenerbahce, leaving Erik ten Hag’s side still searching for their first European win of the season. Despite taking an early lead in Istanbul, the Red Devils failed to capitalize, with a lackluster second-half performance allowing Fenerbahce to equalize and keep United winless in the competition.

Promising Start Turns into Missed Opportunity

United, buoyed by a weekend win against Brentford, arrived in Turkey with renewed optimism. The team looked to build momentum after a challenging start to their European journey. Christian Eriksen’s early goal in the 15th minute, assisted by Noussair Mazraoui, gave fans hope that Ten Hag’s men had turned the corner.

However, any sense of control slipped away as Youssef En-Nesyri leveled for Fenerbahce shortly after halftime, capitalizing on United’s defensive lapses. The lack of sharpness and focus at the back continues to be a recurring issue for Ten Hag’s side, who now face mounting pressure as they sit with only three points from three Europa League matches.

Ten Hag Fails to Fully Heed Mourinho’s Advice

Jose Mourinho, who previously suffered a defeat with Manchester United in Turkey, had famously warned about the intense atmosphere and challenges of playing Turkish teams on their home turf. His words, spoken after his own loss to Fenerbahce in 2016, resonate even today: “When you play against them at home, it’s easy – 2-0 or 4-0. You come to Turkey, and it’s a completely different story.”

Ten Hag’s team showed they had learned from those past lessons in the first half, riding out the Turkish storm and breaking the deadlock early. However, the second half told a different tale as United failed to maintain their intensity and allowed Fenerbahce to control the game.

Mourinho’s presence on the touchline also added to the drama. The former United boss, now managing Fenerbahce, was shown a red card for his behavior on the sidelines, adding to the tension of an already fiery contest.

The Road Ahead for United

A point away from home is hardly a disastrous result, but given United’s struggles in previous matches against FC Twente and FC Porto, the draw in Istanbul does little to ease the pressure on Erik ten Hag. With just three points from three games and no European win in 12 months under his belt, questions about the Dutchman’s ability to guide United through their Europa League campaign are growing louder.

United’s next European fixture will be critical as they look to reverse their fortunes. Ten Hag will need to address his team’s defensive frailties and find a way to convert promising leads into victories if they are to avoid another disappointing season in Europe.

For now, Mourinho’s 2016 warning still hangs over Old Trafford—playing in Turkey is never easy, and Manchester United has once again learned this the hard way.
