Spanish defender Marc Cucurella has spoken out after enduring relentless booing from fans during Spain’s tense 2-1 triumph over France in the Euro 2024 semi-finals. The match, held at the Allianz Arena, saw Cucurella’s side secure a dramatic comeback victory with goals from Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo, overturning an initial lead by France’s Randal Kolo Muani off Kylian Mbappe’s assist.

Despite his instrumental role in Spain’s win, Cucurella faced a hostile reception from sections of the crowd, predominantly German fans, allegedly in response to a contentious handball incident during Spain’s quarter-final clash against the host nation. VAR reviewed the incident, ruling that Cucurella’s arm was in a natural position, yet the decision sparked considerable controversy in German media circles.

Reflecting on the booing incident in an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena Cope, Cucurella expressed his disappointment, stating, “These are things that happen, I’m not to blame for anything. I don’t know what they were trying to achieve with that, but that’s the way it is.” He emphasized the importance of Spain’s qualification for the final, focusing on the team’s achievements amid the distractions.

Cucurella’s sentiments were echoed by his international teammate Daniel Vivian, who condemned the treatment, asserting, “No player deserves this. If you come onto a football pitch to boo someone, you have no respect for someone who is doing their job.”

The Euro 2024 tournament has seen Cucurella emerge as a surprise standout, his performances elevating his status despite initial doubts over his selection ahead of more established players. His contributions for Chelsea and now for Spain underscore his growing stature in international football, potentially positioning him as a key asset for manager Enzo Maresca in the upcoming season.

As Spain prepares for the final against either England or the Netherlands in Berlin, Cucurella’s resilience in the face of adversity has highlighted both his personal resolve and the unity within the Spanish squad amid challenging circumstances.
