This comment stemmed from Biden referencing comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s joke about Puerto Rico being an “island of garbage” at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally. Despite Biden’s clarification that his remarks were aimed at Hinchcliffe and not the Trump supporters, Kelly and other MAGA proponents seized the moment to turn the insult into a badge of honor.
This tactic mirrors the way Trump supporters proudly adopted the label “deplorable” after Hillary Clinton used it to describe them in 2016. Trump himself has also referred to America as a “garbage can for the world” during rallies, further cementing this narrative among his base as they gear up for the upcoming 2024 election.
