In the latest public address by President Joe Biden, a momentary lapse in memory during a press conference led to an apology as he struggled to recall the name of the reporter he was supposed to call upon.
“I’m embarrassed,” President Biden admitted, glancing down at his cue cards. “I think it’s CBS, but I can’t remember who at CBS. And I’m sorry,” he added during the briefing held in Woodside, California, focusing on discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
According to a White House transcript, the correct reporter was CBS News’ Weijia Jiang. However, the real issue arose as even with pre-prepared cue cards, the President was unable to accurately identify the journalist.
Despite the cue cards explicitly spelling out the reporter’s name phonetically and outlining the questions, Biden continued to struggle. A previous instance in the spring showcased the reporter’s name written out phonetically, along with a basic outline of the question.
Twitter user Rob Allen (@RobMAllen1971) highlighted this issue, emphasizing the use of Q cards with pre-selected reporters and the corresponding answers.
In another case from April 26, 2023, a cheat sheet at the press conference had a reporter’s question visibly written on it, demonstrating the extent to which aides are providing information. Even with this assistance, Biden did not attempt to pronounce Courtney Subramanian’s last name accurately, referring to her as “Courtney, Los Angeles Times.”
Last month, another press conference featured cue cards displaying both the reporter’s name and picture, prompting criticism and comparisons to a kindergarten worksheet.
While press conferences are not expected to be exhaustive speeches, concerns arise as these incidents raise questions about the President’s cognitive state. Critics argue that the aid provided, resembling kindergarten-level cues, is indicative of a deeper issue.
Despite potential explanations, such as the “childhood stutter” excuse, public perception remains a concern. Social media platforms circulate images and observations, prompting individuals to question whether the President’s cognitive abilities are fully intact.
In the eyes and ears of the public, these instances indicate a potential struggle with cognitive function, raising concerns about the ability to address adversarial questions. Even with the aid of cue cards, President Biden’s recent lapses suggest that the challenges persist.
