House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has vowed to step down if he fails to pass President Donald Trump’s highly ambitious “big, beautiful bill.” According to reports, Johnson privately told House GOP lawmakers that they could remove him from the speakership if he doesn’t deliver on his promise to push through Trump’s sweeping vision, which includes tax cuts, energy deregulation, and militarizing the U.S.-Mexico border.
This pledge comes after growing discontent within the Republican ranks over the Senate budget resolution. Some members argue it doesn’t go far enough to achieve Trump’s vision, particularly with respect to the spending cuts necessary to clear the path for his legislative agenda. Johnson’s fiery commitment to this cause was seen as a “blood oath” by some of the GOP’s more conservative members, eager for a leader who would not back down.
In a private meeting with the GOP caucus, Johnson reportedly told lawmakers that if he couldn’t fulfill his fiscal promises—including at least $1.5 trillion in spending cuts—he would be willing to be ousted from his position. This declaration, backed by a rule allowing a “motion to vacate” the speakership, is meant to assure his colleagues of his seriousness in advancing Trump’s policies.
Despite the intense pressure, Johnson’s resolve is unwavering. He’s committed to moving forward with the domestic policy megabill, which Republicans can now pursue along party lines after a recent successful vote. This legislative push, however, has not come without its challenges. The GOP has faced disagreements between the House and Senate, as well as internal chaos from factions within the party, including a weekslong rebellion led by far-right Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) and a group of Democrats pushing for changes to support new mothers in Congress.
Johnson’s pledge signals the high stakes within the GOP as they work to align their priorities with Trump’s agenda, promising a tumultuous path ahead for the speaker and his party.
