Renowned historian Allan Lichtman, famed for his precise forecasts of presidential elections dating back to 1984, shared insights on the potential winner of the highly anticipated 2024 election in a report by the New York Post published on Wednesday, February 7, 2024.
Lichtman’s analysis indicates that President Joe Biden currently maintains a slight lead over former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical matchup.
Utilizing his prediction methodology known as the “Keys to the White House,” Lichtman employs 13 true or false questions to gauge a candidate’s likelihood of victory. These questions cover various aspects such as party mandate, incumbency, policy changes, economic indicators, and charisma.
Each affirmative response earns a candidate a “key,” while their opponent gains a point for negative responses. Lichtman’s assessment reveals that Biden has secured five keys, whereas Trump has earned three, leaving five keys undecided.
“A lot of things would have to go wrong [for the election keys] to go against Biden,” Lichtman noted cautiously, refraining from making a definitive prediction.
Biden’s advantages lie in his incumbency status and the policy changes he has implemented during his presidency. Lichtman emphasized that Biden’s incumbency status automatically provides an edge, coupled with policy changes enacted during his tenure.
One key favoring Trump is the Republican Party’s majority in the House of Representatives, granting him key number one.
Lichtman also highlighted Trump’s potential advantage if Biden fails to achieve significant success in foreign or military affairs, which would earn Trump an additional point.
Professor Lichtman, known for accurately predicting past election outcomes, including Trump’s victory in 2016 and Biden’s triumph in 2020, continues to garner credibility in the field of election forecasting.
However, it’s crucial to recognize that no prediction model is foolproof, and various variables can influence election results.
