Well, well, well. No one saw THIS coming.
A recent speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library left audiences stunned—not because of what was said, but because of what wasn’t. Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell took the stage, delivering remarks that were both expected and utterly jaw-dropping. He called out leadership failures, hinted at deep political divides, and threw some unmistakable shade—all without uttering a certain former president’s name. Now THAT is a skillful politician at work.
For years, McConnell was a steadfast Republican leader, standing in lockstep with Donald Trump. But after the events of January 6th, the alliance shattered. McConnell made his displeasure crystal clear, condemning the attack and stating, “The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the President and other powerful people.” That was just the beginning of the icy distance that followed.
The two hadn’t spoken for months after the insurrection, and when they finally did, it was reportedly cold, impersonal, and brief. The relationship was fractured beyond repair. While McConnell stopped short of directly supporting impeachment, his behind-the-scenes maneuvering and carefully chosen words sent a message loud and clear: He was done playing along.
Now, as McConnell prepares to leave leadership, he’s making his stance even more apparent. “Within the party Ronald Reagan once led so capably, it is increasingly fashionable to suggest that the sort of global leadership he modeled is no longer America’s place,” he remarked, taking aim at the shift in Republican ideology. According to Politico, his speech hinted that he could become a key counterforce to the next administration’s national security moves.
For many, McConnell has long been a political villain, earning the nickname “The Grim Reaper” for his ruthless legislative tactics. But in the wake of January 6th, some saw a different side—one willing to push back, even at great political cost. While his resistance was subtle, it was enough to shake the foundation of the Republican stronghold.
Trump, famously unable to handle disloyalty, must have been fuming. Having McConnell—a seasoned, strategic powerhouse—turn on him was the last thing he expected. And yet, the former president never seemed to learn his lesson. The reality is, when you lose someone as politically calculated as Mitch McConnell, the tide is truly turning.
