Fresno County, California, a mother and her adult son are facing multiple felony charges related to the alleged kidnapping of her ex-boyfriend’s 13-year-old daughter in February 2016. Sandra Garcia, 48, and Mark Anthony Roque, 25, stand accused of orchestrating a terrifying ordeal, with two other individuals also facing charges in connection with the case.

The victim, who is now in her twenties, took the stand recently to provide harrowing details of the incident that took place on that fateful day. She recounted how she was abducted just moments after disembarking from the school bus. Masked assailants dressed in black tied her up, blindfolded her, and threw her into the trunk of a car before she could reach her home.

Once in captivity, the victim was subjected to unspeakable horrors. She was stripped naked, physically assaulted, and sexually abused with a stick. Afterward, she was left bound to a tree for several hours in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Clovis. Despite her dire circumstances, she managed to escape by freeing herself from the yellow rope that bound her and walked for over a mile until she found help from a concerned homeowner, who promptly alerted the local sheriff’s office.

The investigation into this heinous crime revealed that it was not a random act. Authorities discovered that Sandra Garcia, who had been in a relationship with the victim’s father, had conspired with the other individuals involved in the kidnapping.

Miguel Carriedo, 47, Garcia’s cousin, has turned state’s witness after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime and torture. Brandon Roque, Garcia’s other son, entered a no-contest plea to conspiracy to commit a crime.

Prosecutors assert that Garcia initiated the kidnapping plan after her ex-boyfriend, Johan Gidstedt, evicted her from his home. Her motive was to intimidate Gidstedt’s young daughters, aged 10 and 13 at the time, in the hopes that they would request to return to their mother in Sweden. Garcia believed that this action would lead to her reconciliation with Gidstedt.

However, suspicions arose early in the investigation. Gidstedt, who was out of town when the kidnapping occurred, asked his friend, Therese Maria Knutsson, to provide support to Garcia. Knutsson reported witnessing unusual behavior within Garcia’s family, with concerns primarily centered on Garcia herself.

Law enforcement officers testified that Garcia’s demeanor during the initial investigation did not reflect favorably on her. She was described as confrontational and demanding, which raised suspicions.

The victim’s younger sister also took the stand, shedding light on the deteriorating relationship between her father and Garcia leading up to the incident. The sister’s testimony pointed to a possible motive for Garcia’s actions. On the day of the kidnapping, she recalled staying home from school due to illness, which disrupted Garcia’s plans. Concerned about her missing sister, the younger sibling confronted Garcia, who offered reassurances but appeared unusually calm.

This ongoing trial continues to uncover unsettling details surrounding the alleged kidnapping conspiracy, as witnesses and evidence illuminate the disturbing events of that day in 2016.
