Nicola Baker, wife of Countryfile star Matt Baker, has shared insights into their life together, balancing the demands of Matt’s television career with running their family farm. In a candid piece for Good Housekeeping, Nicola opened up about the challenges they face and how they navigate time apart.
Nicola, a former NHS physiotherapist and now an author of the children’s book “Finding Hope,” revealed that despite Matt’s busy schedule, he manages to be present at home frequently. This balance is crucial as they juggle the responsibilities of their farm and family life.
Reflecting on their life together, Nicola highlighted the toughest moments, particularly those influenced by the unpredictable British weather. “The toughest moments for me are when the weather turns and the responsibilities become greater,” she said. “You can’t just decide not to go out and feed that day. Sometimes, on the coldest, wettest days, summer feels a lifetime away. It certainly makes you appreciate our seasons.”
The Bakers share their farm with their teenage children, Luke, 16, and Molly, 14. Nicola emphasized the importance of instilling a love for farming in their children, fostering an appreciation for the countryside lifestyle she grew to love after meeting Matt as a teenager. “When I met Matt as a teenager, that was when I fell in love with the farm and the countryside and that way of life. Before that, I had no experience of it,” Nicola recounted.
Earlier this year, Nicola also spoke on Lorraine about how Matt has influenced her appreciation for rural life. Matt, in turn, has expressed his gratitude for having met Nicola before his television career took off. In an interview with the Telegraph, he reflected, “I’m so lucky that I met my wife Nicola before any of this telly lark started. I knew way back then she was the one, and I don’t think I could have done all this without her. She knows how intently I focus on things, and she allows me to do that. I call her my rock.”
The Bakers’ two-decade marriage and shared commitment to their farm and family life are testaments to their enduring partnership. Through the toughest moments and time apart, Nicola and Matt continue to support each other, ensuring their family and farm thrive.
