Elon Musk’s launch of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has sent Democrats into a frenzy. Slashing wasteful spending, they argue, is a constitutional catastrophe—as if the Founding Fathers explicitly protected taxpayer-funded transgender operas in the Bill of Rights. But here’s the kicker: Democrats weren’t always against cutting government waste. In fact, they used to champion it.
Flashback to 2011, when then-President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden unveiled their grand “Campaign to Cut Waste.” They promised to crack down on inefficiencies, eliminate pointless spending, and give Americans “the government you expect and deserve.” Sounds a lot like DOGE, doesn’t it? Yet, today, those same Democrats are attacking the very initiative they once praised.
When Obama introduced his waste-cutting plan, he emphasized that it wasn’t about cutting essential programs but about stopping reckless government spending.
“Everyone knows that getting rid of the deficit will require some tough decisions, and that includes cutting back on billions of dollars in programs that a lot of people care about,” Obama declared. “But what should be easy is getting rid of the pointless waste and stupid spending that doesn’t benefit anybody.”
Sounds like DOGE, doesn’t it?
Obama wasn’t wrong—Washington has a long history of throwing away taxpayer dollars. He even mocked the government for funding a website dedicated to a folk music group made up of forest rangers. “They’re called the Fiddling Foresters,” he joked. “I’ll put their music on my iPod, but I’m not paying for their website.”
Sounds like DOGE, doesn’t it?
Another major example of waste? Federal real estate. Obama pointed out that bureaucratic red tape had left the government holding onto abandoned buildings that should have been sold off years ago.
“For the last decade, the government’s owned a massive and completely empty warehouse in the middle of Brooklyn,” he admitted. “We need to step up our game. We need to go after every dime. We need to make government work for you.”
Sounds like DOGE, doesn’t it?
Even Biden, the man now leading an administration that cries foul over spending cuts, was once the face of waste reduction. Tasked with leading the initiative, Biden promised Americans, “From this point on, the American people are entitled to transparency.” He vowed that cutting waste would require a “relentless focus” and claimed that the administration was “holding ourselves accountable.” He even suggested their efforts were about more than just waste—they were about creating “an entire new culture” that future administrations would follow.
Sounds like DOGE, doesn’t it?
But now that President Trump has introduced a real, permanent solution to government waste, Democrats have changed their tune. The Department of Government Efficiency—designed to eliminate fraud, streamline bureaucracy, and ensure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely—is precisely the kind of initiative Obama and Biden once pretended to support. So why the sudden opposition?
Simple: Democrats were never serious about cutting waste. Obama’s “Campaign to Cut Waste” was just political theater—a way to act fiscally responsible while continuing to bloat government spending. And when it comes to cutting waste, they want to be the ones calling the shots. When they control the budget, nothing ever really gets cut.
The truth is, Democrats only support waste reduction when it benefits them politically. But when a Republican actually follows through, they call it a “constitutional crisis.”
