Authorities in Pahokee are investigating a violent of shootings that left two people dead, one injured, and a sheriff’s deputy hospitalized late Wednesday night. The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Charles McCloud Jr., was fatally shot during a confrontation with law enforcement, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO).
The incident began around 10:12 p.m. on February 25, when deputies say McCloud opened fire at a residence on Booker Place. Two adult men were found shot and later pronounced dead at the scene.
Within minutes, additional gunfire was reported in the 8700 block of Dove land Drive. Investigators confirmed that although multiple rounds were fired, no one was struck in that location.
A third shooting followed at a convenience store on Belle Glade Road, where an adult male was injured. He was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.
While responding to reports of gunfire and securing the scene on Dove land Drive, a PBSO deputy was struck by a black GMC SUV allegedly driven by McCloud. Authorities state the deputy was pushed approximately 40 feet. Investigators further allege that after exiting the vehicle armed with a firearm, McCloud attempted to shoot the injured deputy.
The deputy discharged his service weapon, and a second responding deputy also fired. McCloud was pronounced dead at the scene.
The injured deputy sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
Officials confirmed that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), along with the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office and PBSO’s Violent Crimes Division, has launched a comprehensive investigation into both the shootings and the deputy-involved use of force.
In accordance with agency policy, the deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Authorities say additional details will be released as the inquiry continues.
