Georgia State Representative Charlice Byrd has taken a significant step in Georgia by introducing a resolution to impeach Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, as reported by The Daily Caller on Friday, January 26, 2024.
This action comes amid allegations that Willis engaged in questionable professional conduct, specifically involving the hiring of Nathan Wade, described as her lover, and subsequently awarding him what is being referred to as a “lucrative” contract.
Byrd contends that this resolution is based on the belief that Willis violated her oath of office, particularly in her role in prosecuting former President Donald Trump and his 18 co-defendants on racketeering charges.
In a statement, Byrd asserted that Willis has “a laundry list of potential conflicts” that, in her view, make the District Attorney unfit for her position.
“The First Amendment is still the bedrock of this country, and Fani Willis can’t overturn it because she has Trump Derangement Syndrome,” Byrd declared in her statement.
She called on state lawmakers to draw a line and address what she perceives as Willis’s refusal to uphold the Constitution.
Responding to the gravity of the situation, the Georgia State Senate approved, in a 30-19 vote, the establishment of a committee to investigate Fani Willis. This bipartisan move emphasizes the widespread concern surrounding the allegations and underscores the need for a thorough examination of the facts.
A central point of contention revolves around the contract between Willis and Nathan Wade, with the terms stipulating an hourly rate of $250 for Wade’s services, exceeding the $200 hourly rate paid to John Floyd, the state’s top racketeering expert, as of May 2023. Billing statements and contracts obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation shed light on these financial arrangements.
Adding complexity, Willis allegedly falsely claimed during remarks at Big Bethel AME Church that she paid all three special prosecutors, including Wade and Floyd, the same hourly rate, raising questions about transparency and honesty in the Fulton County legal office.
The situation’s intricacies extend to bank statements revealing that Nathan Wade, on behalf of Fani Willis, purchased airline tickets to Miami and San Francisco. The apparent omission of the Miami ticket, bought in October 2022, from Willis’s financial disclosure for that year raises potential concerns about financial transparency and accountability.
Despite these serious allegations, there has been no response from the district attorney’s office, contributing to the growing scrutiny surrounding the situation.
