President Trump Promises ‘Substantial’ Reduction in Tariffs on China

President Donald Trump has expressed optimism that the hefty 145% tariffs imposed on Chinese imports will significantly decrease as he aims for a breakthrough in U.S.-China trade talks. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump emphasized that while the tariffs are high right now, they won’t stay at this level for long.

“145% is very high, and it won’t be that high,” Trump assured, adding, “It’ll come down substantially.” However, he clarified that the tariffs would not return to zero, explaining that such a scenario had previously allowed China to “take us for a ride.” The U.S. has long argued that China’s trade practices were unfair, which led to these aggressive tariffs.

This hopeful stance comes after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent voiced concerns earlier in the day, noting that the current trade standoff between the U.S. and China is unsustainable. However, both sides have yet to formalize negotiations, with Trump indicating that a potential deal would eventually require China to meet U.S. demands if they wish to continue trading with America.

While formal trade talks are still in the early stages, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt mentioned that more than 100 countries have reached out to the U.S. following Trump’s announcement of universal tariffs, though China has not been part of these communications.

The current tariffs have sparked retaliatory measures from China, with the U.S. imposing a blanket 20% tariff on Chinese goods, leaving certain electronics and tech products exempt for now. Despite this, the Trump administration remains hopeful that a deal will eventually be reached, easing tensions and setting the stage for future trade negotiations.

The announcement has had an immediate impact on the markets, with U.S. stock indexes rising over 2% in the wake of Bessent’s comments, signaling investor confidence that a resolution may be on the horizon.
