Queen Elizabeth II, known for her grace and diplomacy, was reportedly left “very annoyed” during Donald Trump’s 2018 state visit to the UK. The late monarch, revered for her unwavering loyalty to her family, took issue with what she perceived as an “ignorant and hurtful” comment about her younger sister, Princess Margaret.
According to sources, the former U.S. president, accompanied by his wife, Melania Trump, had a private conversation with the Queen during the visit. In discussing Margaret, who passed away in 2002 at the age of 71, Trump allegedly referred to her as the “difficult sister.” The Queen, fiercely protective of her family, reportedly viewed this remark as both rude and uninformed.
A source involved in organizing the visit revealed to the Daily Mail:
“Trump put his foot in it by saying Margaret must have been a difficult sister. The Queen was very annoyed with this remark, which she viewed as ignorant and hurtful. She always defended Margaret to the hilt.”
Was Queen Elizabeth Fond of Trump?
While Trump has claimed that he was “her favorite president,” his interactions with the late Queen suggest otherwise. Royal insiders have hinted that Her Majesty did not enjoy his company as much as he might have believed.
Craig Brown, a royal author, detailed in his book A Voyage Around The Queen that the monarch disliked certain behaviors of the former president. One notable grievance was his habit of looking over her shoulder during conversations, seemingly in search of someone “more interesting.”
Additionally, the Queen is said to have jokingly remarked about Trump’s dynamic with Melania after one of his two visits to the UK.
Despite these claims, Trump continues to insist on a positive relationship with the Queen. In an interview with The Mail, he refuted rumors of royal disapproval, stating:
“I heard I was her favorite president. I had a great relationship with the Queen. She liked me, and I liked her. She was an amazing woman.”
A Remark That Lingers
Although the Queen maintained her composure, her displeasure over the comment about Princess Margaret underscores her enduring loyalty to her family. Margaret, often misunderstood by the public, shared a close bond with the Queen, who always stood by her sister through thick and thin.
Trump’s remark may have been a minor misstep in his eyes, but for a monarch who valued family above all else, it was a breach of decorum that didn’t go unnoticed.
