As the 2024 NFL season heats up, the Baltimore Ravens have shown impressive performance, currently standing at 5-2 and leading the AFC North. Coach John Harbaugh’s team aims to continue their winning streak as they prepare to face the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field in Week 8. Despite their success, the Ravens face challenges, particularly in their secondary, which has been inconsistent and susceptible to big plays.
An Eye on Improvement
With the trade deadline approaching, the Ravens may consider strengthening their defense to maintain their competitive edge. According to analysts Jacob Robinson and Dianna Russini from The Athletic, the team has set its sights on Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker. The proposed trade would involve sending a third and fifth-round pick in 2025 to acquire the 28-year-old safety, who commands a hefty $59 million contract.
The addition of Baker could address some of the weaknesses in Baltimore’s secondary. The Ravens’ recent signing, safety Eddie Jackson, has not performed as expected, currently ranking 127th out of 140 safeties according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). In contrast, Baker, who holds the 36th position, would significantly enhance the team’s defensive capabilities.
Baker’s Impact and Challenges
Baker has consistently ranked as one of the top safeties in the league since his debut in 2017. His prowess as a run defender is notable, with 22 run stops and a 77.2 run defense grade this season. However, his performance in coverage has raised concerns, allowing an 85.7% completion rate and a 128.8 passer rating when targeted over the first seven games of 2024.
While acquiring Baker could be a splash move, it might not be the most strategic decision for general manager Eric DeCosta. The Ravens’ primary concern lies in their ability to limit passing attacks, a gap that Baker may not effectively fill. Additionally, parting with valuable draft capital could hinder the team’s long-term strategy, especially if Baker opts for another team in free agency after the season.
Focus on Cornerback Needs
Instead of pursuing a trade for Baker, the Ravens should prioritize acquiring a solid cornerback to complement their defensive lineup. Brandon Stephens has struggled to inspire confidence as the team’s second cornerback, while rookie Nate Wiggins has shown promise. Veteran Marlon Humphrey has thrived in a slot role, but Baltimore desperately needs a reliable boundary corner to enhance its defensive performance.
