Boston Red Sox star Jarren Duran has been suspended for two games following a homophobic outburst directed at a heckler during the team’s Sunday game against the Houston Astros.
During the sixth inning of the game, Duran, who is known for his All-Star status, was caught on the New England Sports Network broadcast directing a derogatory slur at a fan. The broadcast captured Duran turning toward the stands and saying, “Shut up, you fucking faggot.”
In response to the incident, the Red Sox released a statement condemning Duran’s actions. The team’s statement expressed deep regret and offered an apology to the LGBTQ+ community and young fans.
“During tonight’s game, I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan,” Duran said in the statement. “I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community.”
The statement continued, “Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility. I will use this opportunity to educate myself and my teammates and to grow as a person.”
Duran addressed the incident in a Monday press conference, describing his remarks as a mistake made in the “heat of the moment.” He elaborated, “It was just a heckler heckling me the entire game. I just let the moment get the best of me. I just said something I shouldn’t have said.”
The Red Sox have announced that Duran’s suspension will begin on Monday as the team prepares for a three-game series against the Texas Rangers. Additionally, the salary from Duran’s suspension will be donated to the LGBTQ+ advocacy group PFLAG.
In a follow-up statement, the Red Sox emphasized their commitment to inclusivity and education. “We echo Jarren’s apology to our fans, especially to the LGBTQ community,” the team said. “We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches, and staff on the importance of inclusivity.”
This incident has sparked discussions about accountability and inclusivity in professional sports, highlighting the need for continued education and awareness within the athletic community.
