Richard Simmons’s recent autopsy report has shed light on the circumstances surrounding the fitness guru’s death. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, Simmons, who passed away on August 13, 2024, had prescription medications used to treat insomnia in his system at the time of his death.
The report, made public on Thursday, detailed that Simmons, 76, had traces of diphenhydramine, trazodone, and zolpidem in his system. These medications are commonly prescribed for insomnia and sleep-related issues. Importantly, the toxicology report confirmed the absence of any recreational drugs.
The same prescription medications were also found in Simmons’s bathroom, further corroborating the findings of the autopsy. The Medical Examiner determined that Simmons’s death was the result of “sequelae of blunt force traumatic injuries” from a “ground level fall.” The manner of death was classified as an accident.
Additionally, the report noted that Simmons had arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, a condition that can contribute to heart-related issues. Simmons had reportedly experienced a fall on the evening of August 12, the day before his death, but chose not to seek immediate medical attention. Instead, he was assisted back into bed by his caretaker.
Simmons’s speech appeared slurred when observed by his secretary, who also noted that he had taken medication before going to sleep. The next morning, his caretaker found him unresponsive on his bedroom floor.
Simmons had celebrated his 76th birthday the day before his death, expressing gratitude and joy on social media. He had even shared his plans to celebrate by sticking a birthday candle in a zucchini, reflecting his vegetarian lifestyle. In his last public message, Simmons conveyed his appreciation for the overwhelming birthday wishes and shared his commitment to continuing his work helping others.
In a statement, Simmons’s brother Lenny and family spokesperson Tom Estey confirmed that the death was ruled accidental, attributing it to recent falls and heart disease. They thanked the public for their support during this difficult time.
Simmons’s passing marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to fitness and inspiring others. His legacy continues to resonate with those who knew him and admired his work.
