Rob Lowe recently shared a nostalgic and humorous anecdote from his wild days in the 1980s, recalling the time he and Michael J. Fox were pulled over by the police while smoking weed on a star-studded bus tour. The incident took place during a California tour advocating for Proposition 65, aimed at cleaning up the state’s water system.
In an episode of Ted Danson’s podcast, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” Lowe recounted the memorable event. “We got pulled over for speeding — well, also because Michael J. Fox and I were smoking pot out of the top of the Greyhound bus roof,” Lowe shared, painting a vivid picture of the carefree spirit of the era.
The bus was packed with Hollywood A-listers, making the stop even more surreal. “The cop pulled us over, and it was like a clown car — out came Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, Judd Nelson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Robert Downey Jr., Jane Fonda, and Danny Glover,” Lowe recalled, adding to the legendary nature of the story.

When Danson inquired if they were pulled over due to the smoke, Lowe clarified that it was because they had the “top emergency hatch off” while he and Fox were enjoying their cannabis on the roof.
Lowe, who has been open about his past struggles with substance abuse, celebrated over 33 years of sobriety in 2023. He credits rehab and the support of his wife, Sheryl Berkoff, for helping him turn his life around. The couple, who married in 1991, share two sons.
In a heartfelt Instagram post marking his sobriety milestone, Lowe wrote, “33 years ago today I found recovery and a tribe that has sustained me on my incredible, grateful journey. My life is full of love, family, God, opportunity, friends, work, dogs, and fun.” He also offered words of encouragement to those battling addiction, saying, “Hope and joy are waiting if you want it and are willing to work for it!”
