Tennis coach Chris Crabb shares his experience working with Robert Downey Jr. while preparing for the 1992 film Chaplin. The Marvel actor’s gratitude and personality shone through during their time together, revealing a different side of the superstar.
When Chris was approached by CAA, a major talent agency, he was thrilled to take on the role of coaching Downey Jr. in tennis for the film. At just 22, Chris had recently finished working on Danger Bay, and Robert was about to step into the iconic role of Charlie Chaplin at age 27. “I was very excited when I got the call. They knew I was a good candidate to teach him tennis because I understood both the film set and the sport,” Chris explained.

During their year of preparation, Chris noticed that Robert expressed particular anxiety about the tennis aspect of his role. “He said the thing he was most nervous about was the tennis,” Chris recalled. Downey Jr. cited Chaplin’s love for the sport, saying, “Chaplin was on record saying tennis was his religion.” Chris emphasized how important it was for Robert to embrace that mindset.
Describing Robert as “fantastic,” Chris noted that the experience of coaching him was “really special.” After their training sessions, Chris asked Robert for a favor: he had a call-back for a lead role in another movie and sought Downey Jr.’s guidance. Robert eagerly agreed, dedicating an hour to help Chris hone his acting skills. “I thought, ‘How many actors get Robert Downey Jr. as their acting coach?’ It was tremendous,” Chris reflected.

Chris also shared memorable moments from their time on set, recalling the surreal atmosphere as they filmed in Bel Air. He vividly remembered interactions with Sir Richard Attenborough, the film’s director, and being surrounded by stunning foliage on the unique sunken tennis court.
Beyond his coaching, Chris Crabb actively shares tennis tips on his Instagram, aiming to inspire newcomers to the sport. He emphasizes practical advice, like practicing toss techniques in the sun and adjusting racquet grips, to enhance players’ skills. His passion for tennis is evident as he encourages families to introduce their children to the sport. “Tennis has been a pivotal part of my life, and I’ve seen how teaching others can change lives,” Chris stated. “Starting young is amazing, but starting late can be incredible too.”
