Pointed critique, Representative Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) has called out former President Donald Trump for what she describes as a baseless smear campaign against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Sherrill, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot, took to social media to express her frustration with Trump’s recent accusations of “stolen valor” against Walz.
Trump’s claim that Governor Walz, who has a distinguished 24-year record in the Army National Guard, engaged in “stolen valor” has been met with strong backlash. Sherrill’s rebuke highlights what she sees as Trump’s lack of understanding about the true meaning of valor and integrity in military service.
In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Acyn, a senior digital editor for MeidasTouch, Sherrill’s irritation was evident as she addressed Trump’s claims. “Donald Trump couldn’t even define valor, so the fact that he is suggesting Governor Walz has stolen valor is incredibly offensive,” Sherrill stated.
Sherrill’s defense of Walz underscores a broader sentiment among many Democrats who believe Trump’s tactics are less about meaningful discourse and more about creating division. Governor Walz’s military service, including overseas deployments, is well-documented and widely respected, making Trump’s accusations particularly contentious.

Sherrill drew a parallel between Trump’s current actions and the infamous “Swift Boat” campaign against Senator John Kerry during the 2004 presidential election. She described Trump’s approach as a continuation of divisive strategies, akin to those used in the Swift Boat attacks that questioned Kerry’s Vietnam War service.
“It’s the same old bullshit they did with the Swift Boats,” Sherrill remarked, referring to the ads funded by political operatives aimed at undermining Kerry’s military honors. Sherrill noted that Chris LaCivita, a political strategist known for his role in the Swift Boat campaign, is now involved in Trump’s current political efforts.

Sherrill’s comments suggest that the Republican Party relies on personal attacks rather than focusing on substantive policy discussions. “They don’t have any policy. They don’t have any vision of the future. They simply want to divide us,” she argued. Her critique reflects a broader frustration among Democrats who see Trump’s political style as harmful to the nation’s discourse.
Trump’s accusations have elicited a mixed response, with some supporters backing his claims while many veterans and others condemn them as baseless and offensive. The controversy brings to light the ongoing debate over how military service and honors are handled in the political arena.
As Sherrill’s remarks suggest, such accusations extend beyond political strategy, challenging the very principles of honor and integrity in military service.
