Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s press statement announced Barrow’s conviction and sentencing, marking the conclusion of a trial that brought to light the horrifying details of Barrow’s actions.

The trial revealed that Barrow not only strangled his cousin, Nisaa Walcott, 35, but also engaged in a calculated cover-up that shocked seasoned investigators, demonstrating a disturbing level of malevolence.

Barrow’s betrayal extended beyond the murder, as he assumed Nisaa’s identity immediately after the crime. He exploited her credit cards for personal gain, creating a web of deceit by impersonating her in messages to co-workers and relatives.

Omir Walcott, Nisaa’s son at the time, expressed the devastating impact in a tearful victim impact statement, stating, “My whole family is destroyed. It’s been trauma after trauma. It’s like it’s digging at my skin like someone’s nails just scratching.”

Barrow’s manipulation further included moving Nisaa’s remains to the roof of her apartment in a plastic tub, unable to execute his initial plan to transport the body upstate. He callously used her credit cards for a spree that ranged from illicit substances to food and beverages.

On February 25, 2022, Barrow disposed of Nisaa’s body in the Bronx, leaving the container on a sidewalk. Prior to this, on February 18, 2022, he moved the plastic tub to her apartment’s roof, using her credit cards for various purchases.

In an unsettling twist, Barrow responded to a relative’s inquiry about Nisaa’s well-being by sending an old photo via her phone, perpetuating the deception. The relative, recognizing the manipulation, contacted Nisaa’s son, who, still under Barrow’s impersonation, reassured the relative that everything was fine.

The sentencing of Khalid Barrow serves as a stark reminder of the darkness within individuals, exposing not only the brutality of the crime but also the psychological torment inflicted upon those grappling with the aftermath of a family member’s betrayal.
