An anticipation of the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election, NATO leaders are bracing for the potential return of former President Donald Trump, a staunch critic of the alliance and its European partners, as reported by Newsweek on Friday, January 19, 2024.

Despite leaving office in 2021, Trump, currently leading the Republican field, maintains his critical stance on NATO. He accuses the alliance of exploiting the United States and failing to meet agreed-upon defense spending commitments. Furthermore, Trump questions the U.S. obligation to defend NATO members under Article 5, the collective defense clause.

In a recent statement, Trump reiterated his skepticism, stating, “Look, NATO has taken advantage of our country. The European countries took advantage.” When pressed on his commitment to defending NATO nations during his previous term, Trump responded, “Depends if they treat us properly.”

These comments have raised concerns among NATO officials who fear that a potential Trump return to the White House could jeopardize the cohesion and credibility of the alliance. A former senior member of NATO expressed worries that Trump might come back “with a vengeance” as he lacks constraints, checks, balances, allies, or friends, only adversaries.

NATO leaders are actively strategizing for various scenarios under a potential Trump presidency. This includes addressing his demands for increased burden-sharing, potential withdrawal of U.S. troops from Europe, reluctance to confront Russia, and unpredictable behavior.

A central concern for NATO is how to respond to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, a conflict that has intensified since 2021 with Moscow’s invasion and annexation of eastern regions, resulting in significant casualties and displacement. Trump’s hesitancy to support Ukraine, coupled with his praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin, raises fears within NATO that his approach could embolden Putin to challenge the alliance’s security and values.

NATO leaders are also apprehensive about the possibility that Trump may undermine sanctions against Russia and recognize its annexation of Crimea. Fabrice Pothier, a former director of policy planning for NATO, emphasized the concerns within the alliance, stating, “there is probably the worry that this time Trump is going to be serious about pulling out,” describing him as a disruptor, destroyer, divider, and a perceived danger for NATO and the world.
