The imminent release of a report investigating President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents is poised to offer a significant advantage to Donald Trump, regardless of its findings, according to a political analyst.

Expected to be disclosed soon by Special Counsel Robert Hur, the report has raised concerns within the White House about its potential to embarrass President Biden ahead of the 2024 election, as per Newsweek on Tuesday, February 7, 2024.

While not expected to recommend criminal charges, the report has stirred apprehension among Biden’s aides regarding the inclusion of potentially damaging photographs depicting his handling of classified materials, Axios reported.

Grant Reeher, a professor of political science at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, emphasized the impending political implications.

“Even if Hur’s report does not allege any criminal wrongdoing, Biden’s team is rightly worried about the political harm this report could inflict, especially if it contains potentially embarrassing photos,” Reeher said.

Reeher highlighted the significance of the report’s implications for Trump, particularly considering his ongoing legal issues.

“One of Trump’s recurring lines of defense is asserting equivalencies, and this will undoubtedly factor into that as Trump continues to navigate his legal challenges,” he observed.

Despite disparities in their handling of classified documents, with Biden promptly returning all materials to the government upon discovery, the potential for negative optics remains substantial.

Reeher suggested that if the report contains unfavorable images, such as classified documents stored alongside Biden’s Corvette in his Wilmington garage, it could impact public perception similarly to photos of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago setup.

“The one positive aspect for Biden is that if the report is damaging, it does counter to some extent Trump’s allegations that the cases against him are purely political,” Reeher pointed out.

However, he cautioned that drawing attention to the report could backfire for Biden’s team, potentially mitigating any advantages.

As anticipation builds over the report’s release, inquiries to the White House have garnered no response, while the Department of Justice has abstained from confirming any specifics regarding Hur’s findings.

Despite expectations that criminal charges will not be recommended, the political repercussions of the report’s contents remain uncertain.

The White House previously confirmed President Biden’s interview with Hur’s team as part of the classified documents inquiry in October 2023, indicating the administration’s cooperation with the investigation.

As the political landscape braces for the report’s disclosure, its impact on the course of the 2024 election and the ongoing legal battles facing both Biden and Trump looms large, underscoring the pivotal role of classified documents in shaping the narrative surrounding presidential administrations.
