Federal Bureau of Investigation has initiated an inquiry into threats directed at justices of the Colorado Supreme Court following their involvement in a ruling against Donald Trump’s potential 2024 presidential candidacy.
According to a report by CNN on Monday, the FBI is collaborating with local law enforcement in Colorado to examine threats targeting the justices who, last week, made a decisive ruling to exclude Trump from the 2024 presidential ballot in Colorado.
FBI Public Affairs Officer Vikki Migoya affirmed the bureau’s commitment to addressing the situation, stating that they plan to “vigorously pursue investigations of any threat or use of violence committed by someone who uses extremist views to justify their actions regardless of motivation.”
While the Colorado Judicial Branch declined to comment on the reported threats, the Colorado State Patrol confirmed that local authorities would manage any threats against judges.
Responding to a false report at a justice’s residence last week, the Denver Police Department reassured that the situation was clear, with investigations ongoing.
State and local law enforcement, along with independent research groups, are actively monitoring extremist online forums for potential threats against public officials. The names of the four justices who ruled against Trump have been circulating in inflammatory posts on these forums, accompanied by calls for the release of their personal information.
Although specific threats were not uncovered through online chatter analysis, there were indications of a potential risk of violence or illegal activities in response to the ruling. This pattern aligns with previous online activities observed following federal indictments of Trump.
The significance of the ongoing FBI investigation and the threats against public officials underscores the tension and potential for violence that such a ruling can provoke.
This development follows an unprecedented legal decision by the Colorado Supreme Court to disqualify Trump from the state’s 2024 ballot due to his involvement in the insurrection. The decision has disrupted the 2024 presidential campaign landscape, prompting support for Trump from the GOP.
In response to the ruling, Trump’s campaign announced its intention to appeal, with a majority of the American public approving the verdict but anticipating a potential overturn by the Supreme Court.
