In a social media storm, Ronna McDaniel, Chairwoman of the Republican National Committee (RNC), found herself amid controversy and intense calls for resignation following her Christmas posts that triggered a conservative backlash, as reported by Newsweek on December 25, 2023.
McDaniel, who has helmed the RNC for over six years, utilized X (formerly Twitter) on Monday to convey her holiday wishes to followers. However, her ostensibly innocuous “Merry Christmas” messages swiftly stirred up a fierce response, notably among supporters of former President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement.
One of McDaniel’s posts, incorporating Christian-themed sentiments, read, “Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones! Let us rejoice and give thanks for the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ, whose birth gives us joy, hope, and new life.” She further extended prayers for those away from loved ones during the festive season, singling out troops abroad and first responders.
The conservative backlash was immediate, with influential figures like Rogan O’Handley, known as “DC Draino,” vocally demanding McDaniel’s resignation. Social media platforms were flooded with demands for her to step down, expressing discontent and disillusionment with her leadership.
One user, @HonoraBarrett, urged, “Merry Christmas, Ronna. Please RESIGN from @GOP for the sake of our Country! We are no longer funding your organization until there is a big change. Move on.” Another user, @willisfx88, appealed, “Please give Republican voters the gift of your resignation this Christmas.”
Some even proposed a replacement, advocating for “Stop the Steal” activist and January 6 participant Scott Presler to assume leadership. @thetruthbfree posted, “Resign! It really would be the greatest Christmas present any Republican could ask for!”
Criticism extended beyond social media, with far-right activist Laura Loomer accusing McDaniel of disrespecting Trump in a Christmas Eve fundraising email. Loomer highlighted the placement of Trump’s name last among 2024 GOP presidential candidates, calling it “disrespectful to President Trump and the GOP base.”
This latest controversy compounds McDaniel’s already tumultuous tenure as RNC head. Last month, former President Trump seemingly issued an ultimatum, urging McDaniel to cancel remaining GOP primary debates to “save money.” Failure to comply could lead to a potential overhaul of the RNC, potentially ousting McDaniel from leadership.
The financial strain on the RNC has reportedly intensified pressure on McDaniel, grappling with fundraising challenges and navigating the organization’s role within the Republican Party. Moreover, a leaked phone call involving McDaniel discussing Trump’s 2020 loss in Michigan has sparked speculation about potential legal repercussions.
