Arizona Republican Party Chair Jeff DeWit stunned observers on Wednesday by resigning amidst a political upheaval triggered by current U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake, a former Arizona gubernatorial hopeful.
As reported by Newsweek on January 24, 2024, the controversy centers around a purportedly “damaging” audio recording in Lake’s possession, prompting DeWit’s unexpected departure.
Under intense pressure from Lake’s camp, DeWit, in a statement posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), disclosed the circumstances behind his decision.
“This morning, my intention was to defend my position. However, a few hours ago, Lake’s team issued an ultimatum: resign today or face the release of a more damaging recording. Unsure of its contents, I choose not to take the risk. I am resigning as Lake requested, hoping she will honor her commitment to cease her attacks.”
This development unfolded after Lake called for DeWit’s resignation a day earlier, following the release of another audio recording. While the authenticity of these recordings is unverified, the first, reported by the Daily Mail, allegedly captures DeWit attempting to dissuade Lake from entering Arizona’s U.S. Senate race by offering financial incentives.
Lake’s campaign denies engaging in threats or blackmail against DeWit, emphasizing the need for ethical leadership within the Arizona GOP.
“It is unfortunate that DeWit hasn’t recognized how unethical his behavior was and still hasn’t apologized to Arizona Republicans. DeWit’s false claims are just par for the course. The Arizona GOP must be relieved to have his resignation. Now we can focus on getting ethical leadership and win big in 2024.”
DeWit’s resignation raises legal and moral questions regarding the audio recording. He contends that the tape was “selectively edited” and used deceptively. Contrary to the recording’s implications, DeWit asserts that Lake was his employee during the conversation.
“Recorded while Lake was my employee, this conversation raises serious legal and moral concerns. Since then, Lake has pursued a mission to undermine me, making regrettable statements. I believe Lake orchestrated this situation to gain control over the state party.”
