Trump, widely seen as the driving force behind the violent attack aimed at overturning his election loss to President Joe Biden, labeled the rioters as J-6 hostages, not prisoners, expressing concern over their treatment by authorities.
At the start of the rally, Trump saluted as a song performed by the J6 Prison Choir played. The song, titled Justice for All, includes Trump reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the incarcerated individuals singing The Star-Spangled Banner, the U.S. national anthem. Trump had a hand in creating the song, which was made available on various streaming platforms in March.
Trump’s remarks and actions have drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers, law enforcement officials, and civil rights groups who accuse him of glorifying violence and undermining democracy.
Representative Bennie Thompson, chair of the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack, stated, Trump’s words and gestures insult the hundreds of injured officers, the five who lost their lives, and the democracy they defended.
Kristen Clarke, assistant attorney general for civil rights, added, Trump is not only lying about the election, he is also lying about the rioters. They are not hostages, but criminals who attacked our democracy and endangered lives.
Over 1,000 individuals have been charged in connection with the Capitol assault, which resulted in five deaths and numerous injuries. Some defendants have pleaded guilty and received prison sentences, while others await trial or remain at large.
Trump himself is under investigation in four criminal cases related to his role in the attack and his attempts to influence election results in Georgia and other states. He maintains his innocence, continuing to claim that the election was rigged and stolen from him, despite the lack of evidence and court rejections of his lawsuits.
Trump’s recent actions, embracing those involved in the riot, are seen as part of his strategy to mobilize his base and prepare for a potential 2024 presidential run. He has held multiple rallies across the country, repeating his unfounded claims of election fraud and attacking his political opponents.

Michael Steele, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee and a Trump critic, cautions, Trump is playing with fire by calling the rioters hostages and saluting them.
