President Biden has engaged in a sharp exchange with Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley, criticizing her recent comments on the origins of the Civil War. The confrontation arose following a tweet by Biden, which resurfaced a video clip from Haley’s town hall event in New Hampshire. During this gathering, Haley responded to a voter’s inquiry regarding the root causes of the Civil War.

Haley’s remarks suggested that the core of the Civil War revolved around governmental operations and individual freedoms, highlighting the significance of capitalism and economic liberties while minimizing the role of slavery in sparking the conflict.

Responding directly to Haley’s assertions, President Biden unequivocally stated, “It was about slavery.” This direct rebuke underscored a fundamental disagreement between the two political figures regarding the historical underpinnings of the Civil War.

The recorded exchange captured a voter expressing astonishment at the absence of any mention of slavery during a conversation about the Civil War. Democratic National Committee chair Jaime Harrison joined in the criticism, labeling Haley’s stance as “a slap in the face to Black voters.” Harrison emphasized that denouncing slavery is a fundamental expectation for anyone aspiring to the presidency.

Despite Nikki Haley’s growing support in New Hampshire, former President Trump continues to maintain a substantial lead in both early voting states and national polls.

According to current national polls, Trump leads with 63.1 percent support, followed by Haley at 10.8 percent, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis closely trailing at 10.6 percent.

Despite the criticism and President Biden’s explicit condemnation, Haley’s campaign team has refrained from issuing a comment. The controversy sparked by Haley’s comments introduces a new facet to the evolving political landscape as the 2024 election season progresses.
