The 2024 Primetime Emmy nominations have unveiled a groundbreaking achievement for non-English language television, as FX’s historical epic “Shōgun” leads with an impressive 25 nods. This feat marks only the second time a non-English language series has been recognized in the top drama category, following Netflix’s “Squid Game” in 2021.
Set against the backdrop of feudal Japan, “Shōgun” has not only elevated Asian representation but has also shattered misconceptions about subtitles deterring viewership. The series’ compelling storytelling, stellar acting, and impeccable production values have garnered widespread acclaim, culminating in its nomination for Outstanding Drama Series.
Lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada has been nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Drama for his portrayal of the cunning Yoshii Toranaga, while Anna Sawai received a nomination for Best Lead Dramatic Actress for her role as the enigmatic Toda Mariko. Additionally, the show secured double nominations in the Best Supporting Dramatic Actor category with Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira recognized for their compelling performances.
Beyond acting accolades, “Shōgun” has been acknowledged across various technical categories including production design, original score, stunt performance, sound editing, casting, and directing. The series’ visual prowess was further highlighted with double nominations in cinematography.
Debuting in February after nearly a decade in development, the nominations for “Shōgun” send a powerful message to networks and audiences alike, underscoring a growing appetite for diverse and globally-inspired content.
As the anticipation builds for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards scheduled for September 15, “Shōgun” stands poised to make history and redefine the landscape of international television.
