Amidst confusion surrounding a new requirement for British tourists visiting Spain this summer, the Spanish government has issued a reassuring message. The so-called ‘£97 rule’ has sparked concern among travelers, but clarity has finally emerged.

Following Brexit, travelers from the UK face additional considerations at the Spanish border. The rule, officially linked to the Schengen Area regulations, mandates that visitors must demonstrate financial sufficiency upon arrival. Specifically, tourists are advised to prove they possess €113.40 (£97) per person per day for their stay in Spain.

Contrary to initial fears, the Spanish government clarified that these checks are not routine and have not led to any refusals of entry based solely on financial grounds. A spokesperson emphasized that these requirements are standard across the EU for non-Schengen visitors and dismissed media reports as exaggerated.

“The misinformation circulating, primarily from English media, lacks credibility and does not reflect actual enforcement,” stated the spokesperson.

While the UK Foreign Office acknowledges the possibility of additional border documentation requirements for tourists entering the Schengen area, practical enforcement remains minimal. Travelers are generally not subjected to stringent financial scrutiny upon entry into Spain.

This clarification comes as a relief to many British travelers planning their Spanish getaways. With no reports of tourists being turned away for lack of financial proof, vacationers can look forward to their trips with reduced anxiety.

For those heading to Spain this summer, ensuring compliance with basic travel documentation and enjoying the vibrant Mediterranean culture should remain the focus, rather than undue concern over the ‘£97 rule’.
