As the San Antonio Spurs focus on building around rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama, they are actively seeking defensive-minded players and sharpshooters in the trade market, free agency, and the NBA Draft. Recent trade rumors have placed Miami Heat sharpshooter Duncan Robinson in the spotlight, raising questions about whether a trade could be on the horizon.
Last offseason, the Spurs made significant moves, acquiring veteran Harrison Barnes to enhance floor spacing, drafting promising lockdown defender Stephon Castle, and signing Chris Paul to provide mentorship and leadership on the court. The current starting lineup looks solid, featuring Paul orchestrating the offense, Devin Vassell and Barnes stretching the floor, Jeremy Sochan serving as a versatile disruptor, and Wembanyama anchoring the team defensively.
While the Spurs seem content with their lineup, there are still concerns regarding shooting consistency. Although Wembanyama has shown he can hit the three-pointer, he does not yet possess the reliability of the league’s top shooters. This is where Duncan Robinson comes into play. Known for his shooting prowess, Robinson boasts a career three-point shooting percentage of 39.7%. He has achieved over 40% shooting from beyond the arc in two of his first six NBA seasons, making him a coveted asset.
Tyler Watts of Air Alamo commented on the situation, questioning whether the Heat might part ways with Robinson as they aim to clean up their salary cap. “Nobody is leaving the proven sharpshooter open,” Watts noted, emphasizing the impact Robinson could have on the Spurs’ offense.
Despite being perceived as a liability on defense, Robinson’s shooting ability would be a valuable addition, especially for San Antonio’s second unit. The Spurs have also been linked to more prominent names like Tyler Herro and Jimmy Butler, suggesting that Robinson could either be part of a larger trade package or be acquired in a standalone deal.
With the Spurs having the salary flexibility to match Robinson’s contract and the draft picks to create an appealing offer, the possibility of this trade remains high. If executed, Robinson’s addition could significantly enhance the Spurs’ shooting depth, further supporting their ambitious goals for the upcoming season.
