Steve Martin recently shed light on why he turned down the opportunity to portray Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on “Saturday Night Live.” The actor, known for his distinctive gray hair and glasses, was a popular choice among fans for the role after Kamala Harris announced Walz as her running mate for the Democratic presidential bid.
In a humorous twist, Martin acknowledged the internet buzz about his potential role on the NBC sketch show. He joked on Instagram’s Threads, “I just learned that Tim Walz wants to go on the road with Marty Short,” referring to his upcoming U.S. comedy tour with fellow comedian Martin Short.
Martin confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels approached him with the offer earlier this week. Despite the exciting opportunity, Martin decided to decline. “I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no,” Martin explained. “I said, ‘Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy.’ I was picked because I have gray hair and glasses.”
The comedian, who will celebrate his 79th birthday on August 14, also cited the demanding nature of the role as a significant factor in his decision. “It’s ongoing,” Martin said. “It’s not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again. Again, they need a real impressionist to do that. They’re gonna find somebody really, really good. I’d be struggling.”
Martin’s decision highlights the difference between a celebrity’s resemblance and the skill needed for impersonation. This year marks the 50th season of “SNL,” a milestone that has seen other actors like Alec Baldwin and Maya Rudolph take on memorable roles, including Baldwin’s portrayal of Donald Trump and Rudolph’s recurring impression of Kamala Harris.
As Martin and Short gear up for their comedy tour, which kicks off in Nashville on September 19, fans of both actors can look forward to their comedic routines rather than a political parody on “SNL.”
