Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has become entangled in the controversies surrounding former President Donald Trump’s attempts to subvert the 2020 presidential election, with a pivotal interview with special counsel Jack Smith raising the stakes in Trump’s ongoing legal battle.
In an exclusive interview on CNN’s “The Source with Kaitlan Collins,” Kemp revealed that he had sat down with special counsel Jack Smith’s team some months ago, where he provided information similar to what he shared with special grand juries.
“I basically told them the same thing I told the special grand juries — that I follow the law and the Constitution and answered all their questions truthfully,” Kemp stated.
Kemp, however, could not specify the exact timing of his conversation with the special counsel, adding an element of intrigue to the unfolding legal drama. NBC News had previously reported on Kemp’s interaction with Smith’s office, prompting speculation and questions.
Former President Trump, who faces charges brought forth by Smith in August, has pleaded not guilty. The allegations include conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results and involvement in a scheme to disrupt the electoral vote counting, linked to the Capitol riot.
Governor Kemp had previously testified before a grand jury convened by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who relied on his testimony to file charges against Trump and 18 co-defendants.
This legal entanglement traces back to the weeks following the 2020 election, with a pivotal phone call from Trump pressuring Kemp to convene a special session of the state Legislature to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory in Georgia.
As the political drama unfolds, Kemp’s cooperation with both special counsel Jack Smith and District Attorney Fani Willis underscores a commitment to transparency. Meanwhile, Trump continues to assert his innocence, alleging that the legal actions against him are politically motivated.
