Heartbreaking turn of events on Friday afternoon, a quiet Summerville neighborhood was rocked by gunfire that left 36-year-old Christopher Chapman dead—and a suspect behind bars just an hour later.
The shooting happened around 12:36 p.m. on June 6, 2025, in the 100 block of Oak Street, according to Summerville Police Chief Brian Ozment. Officers arrived at the scene to find Chapman lying in the road, unresponsive, with a severe gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to Chattooga ER, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Police quickly launched a full-scale investigation. Thanks to a joint effort between the Summerville Police Department, Georgia State Patrol, and Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was apprehended during a traffic stop on Taylor Ridge less than an hour after the shooting.
As of Friday evening, the investigation remained active. Teams from the Summerville Police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) were busy interviewing witnesses and executing search warrants as they worked to uncover more details about what led to the deadly encounter.
Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or confirmed what charges they may face. Officials say more information will be shared once the initial investigation wraps up.
Police are urging anyone with tips or knowledge about the case to reach out to the Summerville Police Department or the GBI as they continue to piece together what happened.
