The unfortunate event occurred when the victim, residing in a mobile home, made a frantic 911 call to report a vicious attack by her son’s pack of pit bulls.
Officers swiftly responded to the scene and found the woman under attack by multiple dogs owned by her 38-year-old son, who lived with her. The son had two adult pit bulls and five pit bull puppies.

Arriving at the site, first responders were faced with aggressive pit bulls surrounding the injured woman, posing a dangerous situation. To protect the victim and themselves, officers had to use pepper spray to subdue the dogs while paramedics entered the yard to rescue the injured woman.
The victim was immediately taken to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition due to extensive injuries on her hands, face, and legs. Regrettably, one of her legs had to be amputated following the severity of the attack.
Taylorsville Police Chief Brady Cottam acknowledged the woman’s swift action in calling 911, which likely saved her life. He commented on the tragic incident, stating, “Our hearts are heavy following this incident, and we are grateful the victim was able to call 911 for help as quickly as she did — even as the attack was happening. It likely did save her life.â€
Following the rescue, animal control officers attempted to approach the pit bulls. However, the mother dog broke free from the group, compelling the police to make a difficult decision. In order to protect themselves and the animal control officers, they had no alternative but to shoot and kill the aggressive mother dog.
In response to the incident, the woman’s 38-year-old son cooperated with authorities by surrendering the five puppies and the father dog to the West Valley City Animal Services. Both local animal services and the police department are jointly investigating the attack.
