Tragic incident has shocked Italy after a 17-year-old boy was arrested for the murder of Maria Campai, a 42-year-old woman he allegedly killed on their first date. Authorities believe the teen carried out the horrific act because he “wanted to know what it feels like to kill a person.”
Maria Campai, who had recently moved to Parma, Italy, was found dead in the garden of an abandoned home on September 20, 2024. Her body was discovered after a missing persons report was filed by her sister, Roxana, when Maria failed to return from what she had described as a job interview the day before.
Police investigations led them to the teenager after reviewing hours of CCTV footage and interviewing key witnesses. Upon his arrest, the boy directed officers to the site where Campai’s body lay, covered in leaves, showing signs of brutal violence. Authorities suspect she had been strangled and struck multiple times in the face and head.
The chilling motive behind the crime emerged during questioning, with the teen allegedly confessing that he wanted to experience the sensation of taking a life. It is believed the two had engaged in sexual activity, followed by a violent argument when Campai refused to comply with his demands. According to reports, the teen then attacked her with a dumbbell, leaving her unconscious before strangling her.
Maria Campai, originally from Romania, had moved to Italy in 2000 and settled in Tuscany with her husband. After her divorce in 2022, she relocated to Parma, living with her sister. She is thought to have met the boy on a paid dating site and, despite initially bringing a friend to their first meeting, decided to leave with him alone. It was at this point the situation spiraled into violence.
The teenager’s family garage, where the murder is believed to have taken place, was found splattered with blood and quickly became known to the Italian media as the “garage of horrors.” Authorities suspect that after the killing, the teen dragged Campai’s body to the nearby abandoned home where it was found.
Described by neighbors as kind and reserved, the 17-year-old reportedly had an intense interest in martial arts, specifically mixed martial arts (MMA), and allegedly showed an obsession with extreme fighting techniques online. Italian detectives also found troubling evidence of his fascination with notorious criminals and disturbing sexual practices.
Following the killing, the teen resumed his normal daily activities, attending the technical institute where he was a student. He is currently being held in a Milan youth detention center on charges of murder and concealment of a corpse, awaiting further questioning. Investigators are also set to reexamine the crime scene.
The suspect’s father, who is from Albania, expressed disbelief over the incident, suggesting that if his son is guilty, he may have had accomplices. “He couldn’t have done it all by himself. It’s just not possible,” he told local media. However, the investigation remains focused on the teenager, with no evidence yet of additional perpetrators.
This gruesome case has sent shockwaves through the community, with many left wondering how such a seemingly polite and quiet boy could commit such an atrocity. The trial is expected to reveal more details about the boy’s troubled psyche and the events that led to this tragic end.
