In a disturbing incident at The Belle Meade at River Oaks, an upscale apartment complex in Houston, Texas, Amazon delivery driver Jamaiya Miller, who is black, found herself at the center of harassment and assault during a delivery attempt on December 16, 2023.
The incident, currently under investigation by the Houston Police Department, unfolded as Miller sought to deliver a package directly to a resident’s door within the luxury complex.
Despite being equipped with proper credentials, including an Amazon vest and the package in hand, Miller was met with hostility by two unidentified white women. The confrontation escalated when one resident insisted that Miller bypass the delivery instructions and go to “the concierge” instead.
Taking to Instagram on Christmas Day, Miller detailed the incident, explaining that she chose to follow the customer’s delivery instructions, leading to mounting tension.
The situation took a violent turn when the resident who initially allowed her into the building accused Miller of non-compliance, prompting another woman to allegedly harass and physically assault her.
Video footage of the incident quickly went viral on various social media platforms, capturing the alleged attacker shouting accusations and physically engaging with Miller. Complicating matters, a second woman threatened to call security on the Amazon driver.
Both white women involved in the altercation were dubbed “Karen” in the video, a term commonly used to describe individuals exhibiting entitled behavior.
Miller contends that the hostility directed at her was racially motivated, citing the affluent nature of the neighborhood and the luxurious apartment complex.
The Houston Police Department confirmed an ongoing investigation, stating that a female attempted to block and push Miller during the confrontation. A security guard or doorman eventually intervened, separating the parties involved. The case has been forwarded to the major assault division, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office will determine whether charges will be filed.
Expressing frustration with the pace of the law enforcement response, Miller, in an Instagram update, revealed she has not yet identified the woman who attacked her.
Amazon has issued a statement in support of Miller, expressing concern about the events depicted in the video and pledging proactive communication with delivery partners regarding their safety.
As the investigation progresses, the incident sparks discussions on racial profiling and the safety of delivery personnel, garnering both public outcry and corporate support for Jamaiya Miller.
