Renowned Washington Post contributor Robert Kagan is sounding the alarm, urging Americans to consider the potential consequences if former President Donald Trump triumphs in the 2024 election. Kagan suggests that a Trump victory could lead to the establishment of a dictatorship, cautioning against wishful thinking that Trump will fade away after his controversial presidency.
Kagan highlights Trump’s enduring popularity among his supporters, emphasizing the likelihood of his securing the Republican nomination. Furthermore, Kagan asserts that Trump intends to leverage his upcoming criminal trials as a platform to rally his devoted followers.
Trump will not be contained by the courts or the rule of law. On the contrary, he is going to use the trials to display his power. That’s why he wants them televised.
This raises concerns that Trump, if back in the White House, could potentially move towards an authoritarian rule, enjoying unprecedented power.
If Trump does win the election, he will immediately become the most powerful person ever to hold that office, warns Kagan.
Kagan outlines a scenario where Trump, with fewer constraints than even his first term, could swiftly transform the nation into an autocracy akin to Hungary or Turkey. Experts caution that, with control over the executive branch and a fervent following, Trump might disregard democratic norms, leading to a significant shift in the country’s governance.
Political scientist Jacob Levy stresses the need for Americans to acknowledge the possibility of an election result that challenges the foundations of democracy and the rule of law. Under a second Trump term, experts anticipate a rapid consolidation of power, erosion of checks on executive authority, restrictions on free speech and protest, and potential corruption and exploitation of public resources for personal gain.
While the prospect of a Trump-led dictatorship remains speculative, Kagan and other voices urge Americans not to grow complacent. Without robust safeguards and informed citizen participation, the unthinkable may become a reality. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and prepared to defend their rights against potential challenges.
