Columbia, South Carolina – A tragic incident has left the Columbia community in shock and mourning after a shooting, allegedly carried out by three teenagers, resulted in the deaths of three teens and left one injured. The victims of this heartbreaking incident ranged from 14 to 17 years old.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrest of two 17-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy on charges that include three counts of murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a handgun under the age of 18.
Sheriff Lott, addressing the media, revealed that the violence had its roots in a dispute that began “over something stupid” a couple of years ago.
The young lives lost in this senseless tragedy have been identified as 16-year-old Jakobe Fanning, 17-year-old Dre’Von Riley, and 16-year-old Caleb Wise, according to the sheriff’s office.
Fortunately, a 14-year-old injured during the incident has been released from the hospital and is recovering.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Sheriff Lott expressed his concern about the escalating violence in the community, saying, “Three kids are dead. If that doesn’t shock you, then something’s wrong. So we gotta do something. … Now is the time for action.”
Richland County Councilwoman Gretchen Barron echoed the urgency of addressing the issue, emphasizing the need for the community to come together, stating, “Young people got guns and they make poor choices. Now it’s left up to us as a community.”
The sheriff did not disclose where the firearm used in the shooting was obtained, but he highlighted a troubling trend of local teenagers stealing guns from cars, with approximately 100 car break-ins reported over the weekend.
In response to the tragedy, increased security measures were put in place at Columbia’s Eau Claire High School on Monday. This is because at least one of the suspects and all three of the slain teenagers were students at the school, as confirmed by the sheriff and the superintendent.
Superintendent Craig Witherspoon expressed the collective grief of the Richland One school district, stating, “The Richland One family is grieving the loss of three young lives to senseless gun violence. This is an unimaginable tragedy, and we ask everyone to keep the students’ families and the students and staff at Eau Claire High School in your thoughts and prayers.”
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of youth violence and the urgent need for community action to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
