Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina had ambitious plans to assist former President Donald Trump in reaching Black voters ahead of the 2024 election. However, recent reports reveal that Scott’s fundraising efforts have fallen significantly short of expectations.

Launched earlier this summer, Scott’s Great Opportunity PAC promised to raise a staggering $14 million to support Trump’s outreach initiatives. As of Wednesday, the PAC has only managed to gather approximately 10 percent of that pledge, raising a mere $1.4 million, according to a Politico analysis of campaign finance reports.

Funding Sources and Challenges

The fundraising efforts for the Great Opportunity PAC were primarily bolstered by a substantial $550,000 donation from Great Opportunity Policy Inc., a social welfare nonprofit organization. Additionally, prominent GOP megadonors Jeff Yass and Marc Rowan contributed $500,000 and $200,000, respectively. Despite these contributions, the PAC has yet to deliver the significant financial support it promised to Trump.

A source close to Scott, who chose to remain anonymous, indicated that a “slew” of checks arrived at the last minute, suggesting that the recent campaign finance reports may not fully reflect the PAC’s current financial status. However, uncertainty looms over whether these last-minute donations will ultimately help Scott meet his ambitious fundraising goal.

Spending on Advertising

Despite the shortfall in funds, the Great Opportunity PAC has invested approximately $1 million in advertisements targeting swing states. These ads primarily highlight school choice candidates, including far-right Republican Dave McCormick, who is vying for the U.S. Senate seat against incumbent Senator Bob Casey (D-PA).

Trump’s Outreach to Black Voters

Trump’s campaign has made concerted efforts to connect with Black voters, particularly Black men, as part of a strategy to diminish Democratic support within this demographic. Polls indicate that Trump’s appeal among Black voters is stronger than that of previous Republican candidates in presidential elections, showcasing a potential shift in voter sentiment.
