Minnesota Governor and current vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz, known for his former high school football coaching role, has come under scrutiny for allegedly encouraging a student grappling with legal and substance issues to stay involved in sports. The claim surfaced in a recent article by The Ringer, highlighting Walz’s interactions with Dan Clement, a former linebacker from the Mankato West High School football team, who faced challenges with alcoholism and brushes with the law during his teenage years.

“We Need You”—A Coach’s Intervention

Clement, who played under Walz in 1998, shared that he struggled with alcohol as early as high school, leading to several arrests for underage drinking between his junior and senior years. Despite these challenges, Walz reportedly urged Clement to continue playing, often approaching him in the school hallways to say, “We need you.” Clement, initially considering quitting football, ultimately rejoined the team in the second half of his final season.

Reflecting on his experience, Clement shared, “The caring attention he gave, that positive support can pull you through really dark times in your life.” Although Clement did not achieve sobriety until a decade later, he credits Walz’s encouragement with helping him through a difficult period, trusting Walz’s advice over his own instincts. “He was right. I was wrong,” Clement added, describing how support from others has shaped his life positively over time.

Walz’s High School Coaching Legacy in the Spotlight

Since his nomination as Kamala Harris’s running mate, Walz’s short tenure as an assistant football coach has been a focal point in campaign messaging. Walz’s coaching career included a stint at Mankato West High School, where he served as an assistant coach for the team, leading them to a state championship in 1999. Recently, he brought out members of the 1999 championship team during his Democratic National Convention speech to showcase his connection to community and teamwork.

However, Walz’s coaching history has not been without critics. Richard Grenell, former U.S. ambassador to Germany, pointed out on social media that Walz was an assistant rather than the head coach during Mankato West’s championship season.

Controversial Comparisons and Public Appearances

Beyond his coaching days, Walz has made headlines for contrasting his background with that of Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville, a former NCAA Power 5 head football coach with a notable career. Walz remarked in a recent fundraiser that he aims to counter Tuberville’s image, stating his goal is “to show that football coaches are not the dumbest people.”

Walz’s public appearances have also sparked reactions. During a recent high school football game appearance, pro-Palestine protesters gathered in response to his attendance, while some college football fans booed him at a separate game in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Campaign Reactions and Next Steps

As the Harris-Walz campaign navigates the final weeks before the election, Walz’s history as a coach remains a central talking point, underscoring themes of resilience and teamwork. Despite limited coaching experience beyond the high school level, Walz’s supporters highlight his impact on young athletes as a testament to his dedication and community involvement. Fox News Digital reached out to the Harris-Walz campaign and Walz’s office for additional comments, though no response was available at the time of publication.
