The countdown is on—less than 60 days remain to get your REAL ID, and if you haven’t made the switch yet, now’s the time to act. Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID to board any domestic flight, even if you’re just traveling within the U.S. Here’s everything you need to know to ensure you’re ready before time runs out.
Florida has been issuing REAL IDs since 2010 and is fully compliant with federal requirements. But if you’ve yet to update your driver’s license or state ID card, you might find yourself scrambling as the deadline approaches.
What Exactly Is a REAL ID, and Why Is It So Important?
The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005 in response to the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations, aims to enhance security by making state-issued IDs harder to counterfeit. This new standard is now mandatory for anyone needing to access certain federal facilities or board a federally regulated commercial flight.
So, if you’re 18 or older and plan to fly domestically, or enter facilities like nuclear power plants, you’ll need to upgrade to a REAL ID-compliant card.
Do You Have a REAL ID?
It’s easy to check if your current driver’s license or ID card is REAL ID-compliant. Simply look for a star in the upper-right corner. If it’s there, you’re all set!
How to Get Your REAL ID
To switch to a REAL ID, you’ll need to visit your local driver’s license service center or tax collector’s office in person. Make sure to schedule an appointment ahead of time, as DMV offices are already overwhelmed with requests as the deadline nears.
Be sure to bring the required documents. U.S. citizens will need one of the following:
- A valid, unexpired U.S. passport
- Original or certified copy of your birth certificate
- Consular Report of Birth Abroad
- Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship
Non-citizens must provide documents like:
- A valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card
- A valid passport (unless you’re an asylum applicant or refugee)
- Other government-issued documents with your full name
In addition, everyone will need proof of their Social Security number and two documents that confirm their principal residence.
Already Have a Passport? You Still Need a REAL ID (Maybe)
If you have a passport, don’t worry—you can still travel domestically without a REAL ID. A passport serves as an acceptable alternative. However, if you’re planning international travel, your passport will still be necessary for that journey.
The deadline is fast approaching, so don’t wait! Make sure you’re ready for May 7 by securing your REAL ID now.
