TERRY, MS – A routine call turned deadly Sunday evening when Hinds County Sheriff’s Deputy Martin Shields, Jr., 37, was fatally shot while responding to a domestic disturbance at a home on Midway Road in Terry.
Authorities say Shields had just arrived at the scene when Eric Brown, 42, opened fire, striking the deputy. Shields, who had been with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) for about nine months but had prior law enforcement experience, did not survive the attack.
Sheriff Tyree Jones confirmed the heartbreaking loss, expressing condolences to Shields’ family, friends, and fellow officers.
Adding to the grim discovery, law enforcement officials also found an unidentified Black male dead inside the home, though details surrounding his death remain unclear. Authorities have not yet confirmed his connection to the domestic disturbance.
A Be On the Lookout (BOLO) alert for Brown was issued but has since been lifted. Sheriff Jones assured the public that Brown is no longer a threat, though he did not elaborate on the suspect’s fate.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) has taken over the case as SWAT teams and HCSO deputies continue to process the scene.
Investigators are urging anyone with information to step forward. If you have any details related to this case, contact the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office at (601) 352-1521.
