Trump administration has just kicked out South Africa’s ambassador to the United States, Ebrahim Rasool, declaring him persona non grata and ordering him to leave American soil by Friday.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the announcement on social media, accusing Rasool of being a “race-baiting politician” who harbors hatred for President Trump. The decision comes amid growing tensions between Washington and Pretoria, as the U.S. recently cut funding to South Africa, citing its alleged support for Hamas and Iran.
The State Department confirmed that Rasool’s diplomatic privileges and immunities expired on Monday, and South African embassy staff were formally notified. However, it remains unclear if Rasool is still in the U.S. at this time.
The controversy erupted after Rasool made comments during a webinar in Johannesburg, discussing Trump’s policies within the context of America’s changing demographics. Rubio’s post linking to a Breitbart report on Rasool’s remarks further fueled the backlash.
While it’s rare for the U.S. to expel an ambassador, lower-ranking diplomats have often faced similar consequences. The South African government has called the move “regrettable” but insists it remains committed to a diplomatic relationship with the U.S.
This expulsion is just the latest in a series of harsh measures by the Trump administration targeting South Africa—leaving many wondering what’s next in this escalating diplomatic showdown.
