The Trump campaign is facing renewed scrutiny over its connections to Project 2025, despite Donald Trump’s efforts to distance himself from the initiative. The latest developments surrounding Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance’s support for a book associated with Project 2025 have raised fresh questions about these ties.

JD Vance and the Controversial Book
Senator JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, has recently been linked to a book by conservative author Roberts. The book, originally titled “Dawn’s Early Light: Burning Down Washington to Save America,” now carries the less incendiary title “Dawn’s Early Light: Taking Back Washington to Save America.” Vance wrote the foreword for the book and is prominently featured in its promotional material, praising Roberts for outlining “a genuinely new future for conservatism.”

In the book, Vance uses combative language, suggesting that conservatives need to “burn down these institutions” to preserve the American way of life. Roberts himself has echoed similar sentiments, describing the current political climate as a “second American Revolution” that could remain bloodless “if the left allows it to be.”

Trump’s Denials
Despite these connections, Trump has publicly distanced himself from Project 2025. On Wednesday, he claimed on Truth Social, “I have nothing to do with, and know nothing about, Project 2025.” However, the lack of a response from the Trump campaign regarding Vance’s involvement in Roberts’ book has done little to quell speculation.

Project 2025’s Agenda
Project 2025, spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation, is a comprehensive policy document and transition plan that aims to implement sweeping conservative changes across the federal government. The plan includes purging the federal workforce of civil servants in favor of political appointees, weakening environmental protections, limiting labor rights, restricting abortion access, and pursuing a series of federal executions.

A key feature of Project 2025 is its “Presidential Personnel Database,” designed to assemble a cadre of vetted and trained conservatives ready to implement these changes from Day One. Despite its radical proposals, the project is technically independent of Trump’s campaign. However, CNN has reported that at least 140 former Trump administration officials were involved in its development, and its primary leaders are alumni of Trump’s administration.

Heritage Foundation and Trump’s Praise
Trump has previously praised the Heritage Foundation and Roberts. In a 2022 speech, he lauded their efforts to prepare for the conservative movement’s future actions, stating, “They’re going to lay the groundwork and detail plans for exactly what our movement will do and what your movement will do when the American people give us a colossal mandate to save America.”

Roberts, as leader of the Heritage Foundation, contributed the foreword to Project 2025’s main document, “Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise.” In it, he criticizes the current political establishment and cultural elite, drawing parallels to the 1970s and calling for a united conservative front against elite rule and “woke culture warriors.”

While Trump attempts to distance himself from Project 2025, the involvement of high-profile campaign figures like JD Vance and the praise from Trump himself suggest deeper connections. The controversial policies outlined in Project 2025 continue to attract attention and criticism, with Democrats seizing the opportunity to define Trump’s policy agenda as extreme and out of touch with mainstream American values. As the 2024 election approaches, these associations are likely to remain a contentious issue.
