Ty Cobb, a former lawyer in the administration of ex-President Donald Trump, has forecasted that an appeals court will uphold the limited gag order imposed by U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan in Trump’s ongoing criminal case in Washington, D.C., as reported by Media Ite.
Trump is facing prosecution for his alleged involvement in attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election, wherein he baselessly claimed the election was rigged against him.
In October, Judge Chutkan issued a limited gag order on Trump after he publicly denounced Special Counsel Jack Smith as a “thug” and “deranged.” During a recent hearing, one of Trump’s lawyers faced repeated admonishments from an appeals judge.
During an episode of CNN’s OutFront on Monday, Ty Cobb expressed his expectation that the appeals court would maintain the gag order and reiterated his belief that Trump’s persistent violations could land him in jail.
“I don’t think his first or second violation of the gag order will result in imprisonment,” Cobb stated. “But I think ultimately, you know, his narcissism will get the best of him, and he will violate it until he finds out what the limits of Judge Chutkan’s patience are.”
Host Erin Burnett, acknowledging the potential consequences, remarked, “It’s hard to even imagine it, but actually in jail.”
Cobb responded, “I think that’s exactly right. The judges were frustrated with both sides a little bit today, because of, you know, the vagaries of their interpretation of the order and the arguments they were making.”
This isn’t the first time Cobb has made such a prediction. In October, during a live appearance on Burnett’s show, he surprised the host by forecasting that Chutkan would eventually send Trump to jail.
“That’ll be an incredible thing,” Burnett said in response to Cobb’s earlier prediction.
